Kate Middleton's First Official Portrait Is Revealed To Mixed Reviews. Let's Take A Close Look.

The Duchess of Cambridge's official portrait commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in London was unveiled today.

The oil painting, by South African-born artist Paul Emsley, was a result of two sittings and three and a half month's work (and painting from a photograph). A frontal image of the 31 year old Kate's head, the painting is being criticized globally for prematurely aging the wife of the The Prince of Wales.

Several art critics are pointing out the fact that the painting includes bags beneath her eyes, deep lines around her mouth, a pale pallor and gives the Duchess a large nose.

I took the liberty of composing a close up of the portrait against a recent photo of the Duchess, so you can compare for yourself:

In the side by side comparison above, it seems that the artist created a very competent likeness, only in reality, her eyes seem a tad larger, her actual nose is smaller and less rounded and she has far more red in her skin tone than the painting suggests. That said, in my personal opinion, some of the critics are correct.

The photo I used for comparison:

The artist says he altered the color of her eyes to match her blouse (a silk teal shirt with a bow at the neck) and background.

Kate is wearing the sapphire diamond earrings that were said to be fashioned from a pair of Diana's in the portrait.

Can you see the artist painted himself as a reflection in Kate's left eye?:

The Duchess of Cambridge, 31, said that she wanted "to be portrayed naturally — her natural self — as opposed to her official self," Emsley said in the New York Daily News.

Of course the Royals are claiming to be thrilled with the portait (ABC news reports that William called it "beautiful") , but reviews in newspapers and blogs are calling it everything from "rotten' to  'just plain ugly.'

A Viagra-Laced Beer Is Launched To Toast The Upcoming Nuptials Of William & Kate

Bottled virility for the Monarchy. Raise a glass, and a body part, to the soon to be wed Royal Couple with this Viagra-laced beer from Brew Dog. The Royal Virility Performance is a limited edition artisanal brew made with various well-known aphrodisiacs in honor of Prince William's upcoming nuptials to Kate Middleton.

According to the specially commissioned label, the Royal Virility Performance contains Pfizer's magic blue pill (aka Viagra), chocolate, Horny Goat Weed and ‘a healthy dose of sarcasm’. The beer is a 7.5% ABV India Pale Ale and has been brewed at BrewDog’s brewery in Fraserburgh.

With this beer, the folks at Brew Dog wanted to take the wheels off the royal wedding bandwagon being jumped on by dozens of breweries; The Royal Virility Performance is said to be the perfect antidote to all the hype. Brew Dog claims "A beer should be brewed with a purpose, not just because some toffs are getting married, so we created something at our brewery that will undermine those special edition beers and other assorted seaside tat, whilst at the same time actually give the happy couple something extra on their big day."

James Watt, Head of Stuff at BrewDog commented:
“We put a bottle in a jiffy bag marked ‘Prince Willy, Buckingham Palace’. We sent it by Royal Mail as we presume they are most likely to know where he lives. As the bottle says, this is about consummation, not commemoration, so we hope he gets it.”

*The beer will be shipped on the 28th of April* Better snap some up, they only have 1,000 bottles available! Buy it here.

A Gold Plated Wii For Her Royal Highness

Press Release (PROVIDED BY GAMES PRESS):

HRH The Queen of England received an unusual surprise last week as a gold-plated Wii was delivered to Buckingham Palace.

Finished in gold, the unique Wii console was specially commissioned for the Royal Family to mark today's launch (may 21st) of brand new Wii game BIG Family Games - the perfect game for all the family to play together from publisher THQ Inc.

As the UK's ultimate family, the Royals also received one of the first copies of BIG Family Games to road-test their shiny new console.

Danielle Robinson, Product Manager at THQ, said: "BIG Family Games is the ultimate Wii game to get all family members, from grandparents to young children, playing together. The Royal Family is arguably the most important family in the country so we felt that they had to have a copy of the new game.

"But we thought that Her Majesty the Queen wouldn't want to play on any old console, so an extra-special gold one was commissioned. We hope that she and the rest of the Royal Family enjoy the game!"

The Queen and other members of the Royal Family will be able to use their new gold Wii to play 24 unique twists on classic family games including golf, tennis, ladder golf, lawn darts, horseshoes, bocce and more.

Her Royal Highness will be able to play through the game as a single player or get Princes Philip, Charles, Harry, and William, and even Camilla, involved when playing in multiplayer mode. HRH will even be able to create customisable characters for herself and the rest of the family."

What I wouldn't give to see the Queen playing Guitar Hero!
